In a unique blend of entertainment and activism, Gloucestershire's young acrobats are taking to the stage to address a critical global issue: climate change. The Great Big Climate Circus, a four-year initiative by World Jungle, is a vibrant spectacle that combines music, performance art, visual arts, and hands-on activities. What sets it apart is its focus on engaging young people in a meaningful way. Over 700 young individuals from Gloucestershire have been involved, co-creating a circus that reflects their concerns and ideas about the environment.
Director Ben Ward emphasizes the project's approach: "Instead of relying on fear or blame, we use the arts to engage and empower young people. The circus provides a platform for them to express their thoughts and feelings about the planet, inspiring positive action."
A Golden Thread of Youth Voice

Honor Binning, project manager for Creative Sustainability, a key partner in this initiative, highlights the importance of youth involvement: "The golden thread throughout this work is young people's voices. The circus acts themselves are a testament to this. Robyn Beaudro, 18, and Daisy Koos, 20, both from the School of Larks, have incorporated their acrobatic skills with a climate message. Beaudro, an activist inspired by Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough, explains: "We wanted to create a clear scene using our acrobatic skills to convey the message of green energy versus fossil fuels. It's inspiring to see more young people taking action."
A Provocative Performance
The show, which debuted in Stroud and will tour Gloucestershire, has been well-received. The audience's response to the opening night in Stroud was particularly positive, with Beaudro noting that the message was both well-conveyed and provocative. Koos adds, "Putting the message into body movement and a routine that we've worked hard towards has been inspiring, even for me. It's a great way to engage the younger generation."
Impact and Future Steps
The project's impact extends beyond the stage. Creative Sustainability will continue to support around 120 young people throughout the year, helping them develop the confidence to take further action. This initiative not only raises awareness but also empowers young individuals to become agents of change.
