Armagh Amateur Boxers: Abseiling for a Cause
In a thrilling display of courage and dedication, a group of eight intrepid individuals from the Armagh Amateur Boxing Club is set to embark on an extraordinary journey. This team, comprising boxers, coaches, and parents, will brave the heights of the Europa Hotel in Belfast to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Manchester. The Manchester Box Cup, a highly competitive tournament, offers a unique opportunity for these athletes to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience.
The team's commitment to this endeavor is remarkable. Among the participants are coaches Ryan Nugent, Eoin Smyth, Eoin McShane, and Patrick Traynor, as well as parents Natalie Moore and Martin McCormack. Accompanying them are two talented 15-year-old boxers, Phoebe Clarke and Malachy Nugent. Their mission is to provide a life-changing experience for another group of eight boxers, coaches, and parents, who will represent Armagh at the prestigious Manchester Box Cup.
What sets this competition apart is its flexible fight categorisation. It caters to boxers of varying weights and experience levels, ensuring fair and competitive matches. For Chloe Clarke, a coach and a key figure in this initiative, this flexibility is a game-changer. She explains, "The Manchester Box Cup offers three categories: 0-7, 8-14, and 15 plus. This approach bridges the gap between novice and open-weight boxers, creating a more inclusive and competitive environment."
The selected boxers for this journey are Malachy Nugent, Phoebe Clarke, Liam Moore, Danny Traynor, Caoimhe Smyth, Feidhna-Rose O'Neill, Nathan McCormack, and Kaylinn McShane. They will travel with their coaches and parents to Manchester, where they will compete from June 19th to 21st. The financial burden of flights, accommodation, and travel expenses is significant, and the club is grateful for any sponsorship or donations they can receive.
Toner Mechanical & Electrical has already provided invaluable support, enabling the club to purchase essential equipment, including kits and fight vests. Chloe expresses her gratitude, stating, "Their sponsorship has been incredible. It not only provides our boxers with a sense of pride but also ensures they stand out positively when traveling."
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Armagh Amateur Boxing Club fosters a strong sense of community and camaraderie. Chloe emphasizes, "Our club is more than just a sports organization. It offers a supportive environment where members can socialize, make friends, and share a common passion."
The abseil event on June 7th will be a thrilling spectacle, with the team descending 167 feet. Chloe describes the atmosphere, "The excitement and nerves are palpable. Some are thrilled, while others are terrified. It's a testament to their dedication and the spirit of the club."
The funds raised will directly support the team's travel, accommodation, equipment, and representation of Armagh with pride. Chloe concludes, "Every donation, no matter the size, will make a significant difference. We aim to create memorable experiences and foster a sense of community that extends beyond the ring."
